WordPress 6.5 ‘Regina’ is full of inspiration

In early April, the latest version 6.5 of WordPress, known as Regina, was released, introducing a number of notable innovations, especially regarding the Gutenberg page builder. Regina is inspired by the dynamic versatility of the famous jazz violinist, award-winning artist and outstanding jazz educator Regina Carter.

Like the violinist Regina, who is known for her technically masterful classical music background and deep sense of jazz as a bold innovator and an artist transcending the boundaries of genre, her newest WordPress namesake touches the artistic spirit in everyone with its latest version. Let’s take a closer look at the key innovations below.

Font Library

With the new Font Library functionality, website administrators can now easily add and remove fonts without the need to use additional plugins or modify the code. It supports both local and Google fonts, making it much easier to customize the visual design of your website. This functionality is compatible with all Gutenberg block themes and also available via our Zone+ WordPress Assistant.

Improved Revisions

The revisions functionality has been extended, now including block and style changes. This allows you to see the history of all template, block and style changes, providing an even more detailed overview of all changes performed.

Enhanced Background and Shadow Tools

With the new enhanced background and shadow tools, you can easily control the size, repeat and focal point options of your background images. The addition of colour overlays and shadows has also been simplified, helping to make websites more personalized without the use of specific image editing software.

Data View

The Data View functionality allows the users to manage the data of their pages, templates, patterns and template parts efficiently by displaying them either in a table or grid view and also provides the option to make bulk changes.

Interactivity API

A new API has been added for theme and plugin developers, creating a common standard for adding interactions to user interface blocks. Find the overview of this API in a post published on the WordPress website.

In addition to technical improvements, WordPress 6.5 has also significantly improved performance, including the loading speed of posts and the page builder that has now more than doubled. It now supports the AVIF image format, allowing users to use high-quality images with smaller file sizes. Plugin developers can now assign dependencies, supplying clear instructions and links for installing and activating them to the installer. More than 110 performance improvements have been added, making loading of posts and the page builder more than two times faster and input processing up to five times faster.

All these improvements are also available to Zone+ WordPress Assistant users, and if automatic version upgrades have been enabled through Zone+, the required updates will occur automatically.
